Wow, I went to an "elite" scholarship information meeting...when was it, Tuesday or something, and boy. Boy, that's a whole 'nother level right there. The type of people that would get these scholarships (Rhodes, Marshall, Gates), we're talking huge acheivers here, people that do amazing, unique things: design and teach classes, help save native environments in endangered areas, do humanitarian work in their world countries. Shoot, they probably START humanitarian organizations in third-world countries.
So I was intimidated. Let's say somehow I made it to an interview. They have extensive interviews, asking questions that can go absolutely anywhere. For instance, the following scenario/question was posed to an interviewee: I was walking down by the waterfront last evening, and suddenly I saw a flock of birds take off and fly away. Why?
What do you think about euthanasia? Is there anything that you are so sure about that you would never consider changing your view? How did this (name local geographic feature—valley, mountain, canyon) get here?
No “right” answers, of course. And you need to tell them why you believe as you do. They're looking for quick, ingenious thinkers who can handle themselves under pressure and can be intelligent about it.
What an experience it would be to try. I’m going to talk to the contact person. He’s a Stats professor, a subject about which I’d like to talk with someone anyway. I’m not holding my breath. Maybe if gas gets up to $52/gallon, I’ll think I have a shot.
