Deeeeep Math

Here is a long, fascinating story from the New Yorker that gives us just a peek into some of the inner workings, egos, and mind-boggling brilliance of today's elite Mathematics community. This particular saga concerns the Poincaré Conjecture, a problem in topology which until 2002 had been unsolved for nearly one-hundred years.

I had no idea mathematicians could be so competitive. That's an interesting article. When is your proof going to be published?

Uh, yeah, about that proof. Our stat theory professor said he didn't think very many of us would be proving hard theorems for a living. I'm pretty sure I would be included in those who don't.
