Let me see if I can articulate a key but subtle difference between mathematics and engineering, since I was thinking about it today.

Mathematics has a toolbox of techniques, and it looks for problems that can be solved using those techniques. Engineering looks for problems and then looks for ways to solve them, which often involve mathematical techniques.

Mathematics is focused on the science, the knowledge, the technique itself. Engineering is focused on the problem and how to solve it.
